The autumn season, a time of transition and reflection, played a significant role in shaping the retreat’s focus and activities. According to TCM, autumn is governed by the metal element, which symbolizes clarity, precision, and the establishment of boundaries. This elemental influence was intricately integrated into the retreat’s curriculum, guiding participants through a journey of self-discovery and empowerment.
Embracing the Metal Element: The Essence of Autumn
In TCM, the metal element is associated with the lungs and large intestine, organs that are crucial for the processes of intake and elimination. These functions metaphorically translate to the themes of autumn: taking in what is essential, letting go of what no longer serves us, and defining our boundaries.
The retreat began with a warm welcome, ice-breaker games, followed by an introduction to the principles of the metal element in the form of physical stretches. The theory part of the retreat gave an introduction into the basic principles of Traditional Chinese Medicine, yin & yang, and the metal element, among other things. The Metal element teaches us that establishing healthy boundaries is not only about protecting oneself but also about creating a respectful and harmonious environment for all.
Shiatsu: A Pathway to Self-Care and Connection
Shiatsu, a Japanese bodywork therapy rooted in TCM, became the primary modality for exploring these autumnal themes. Through guided sessions, participants learned how to apply Shiatsu techniques to support their respiratory and digestive health, aligning with the metal element’s correspondences. These techniques included gentle pressure application, stretching, and exercises, all designed to promote balance and well-being, especially around the Lung and Large Intestine channels.
One of the retreat’s highlights was the focus on self-care, brought in by each participants goal for the retreat. The act of self-care was presented not just as a luxury, but as a necessary practice for maintaining physical and emotional health, especially for those in giving and nurturing roles in life. By dedicating time to self-care, participants learned to honor their needs and set boundaries that protect their energy and well-being. The shiatsu techniques learned, included some focus on how to position oneself as a giver of Shiatsu, so representing selfcare in the way we give to others too.

Layering Knowledge: From Theory to Practice
This hands-on approach effectively layered practical experience onto the theoretical knowledge of the meridians. Participants first learned about the lung and large intestine channels in a traditional classroom setting, discussing their pathways, functions, and associated health benefits. Then, through guided touch and practice, they applied this knowledge in a tangible way.
This method of learning ensured that the information was not just intellectually understood but also embodied. Participants reported that the hands-on practice made the theoretical concepts more accessible and easier to remember. The physical engagement helped to internalize the knowledge, allowing them to use these techniques confidently in their self-care routines and in assisting others.
Creating a Respectful and Connected Space
A unique aspect of this particular group of participants was the cultivation of a present and respectful connection between giver and receiver in the shiatsu practice sessions. This also led to a sense of safety and mutual respect, allowing participants to share their experiences, support each other’s growth and participate fully in the boundary setting exercises.
Group activities were carefully designed to strengthen these connections. Participants engaged in partner Shiatsu exercises, where they practiced giving and receiving treatments. This reciprocal dynamic highlighted the balance between self-care and care for others, reinforcing the retreat’s core themes of boundaries and respect. Through these exercises, participants developed a deeper understanding of their own boundaries and how to honor them in relation to others.
Reflections and Insights: Personal Growth in Autumn’s Embrace
The integration of the metal element’s principles with Shiatsu practice provided a holistic framework for personal growth. Many participants reported feeling a heightened sense of clarity and empowerment, having gained new tools to help navigate the challenges of setting boundaries in their daily lives. There came an understanding of the interconnectedness between setting boundaries and letting go.
One participant shared, “This retreat has been a transformative experience. I’ve learned how to listen to my body and honor my needs. Setting boundaries used to be difficult for me, but now I understand it’s an act of self-respect and care.” Such reflections echoed throughout the group, highlighting the retreat’s impact on individual and collective well-being.
The Journey Forward: Sustaining the Retreat’s Teachings
As the weekend drew to a close, the sense of community and connection was palpable. Participants left with not only new skills and insights but also a support network of like-minded individuals, having exchanged numbers with new friends and dates to continue to practice together. The facilitators provided resources and suggestions for continuing self-care and learning following the retreat, ensuring that the retreat’s benefits would extend far beyond the weekend.
By aligning with the natural rhythms of the autumn season and the wisdom of the metal element, participants were able to tap into a deeper sense of clarity and empowerment. The respectful and present space created among participants fostered genuine connections and mutual support, enriching the overall experience.
Looking Ahead: Future Retreats in Katikati
With the success of this Autumn Shiatsu Retreat, we are already planning future retreats that will continue to explore the intersections of TCM, seasonal energies, and holistic well-being. Each season offers unique opportunities for growth and healing, and the Shiatsu retreats aim to provide a nurturing space for individuals to explore these opportunities and learn new skills for themselves or a future career in shiatsu bodywork.
Through the integration of Shiatsu and the principles of the metal element, participants embarked on a transformative journey that empowered them to embrace the essence of autumn. As the leaves continue to fall and the seasons change, the lessons learned and connections made during this retreat will undoubtedly continue to inspire and support each participant on their path to wellness. We are inspired to dream about where the goals and inspiration will take each one of the participants as they continue on their journey.
