Joyful Dance – the Summer Element

A Reflection on the Summer Shiatsu Retreat

As we reflect on our Summer Shiatsu Retreat, we feel immense gratitude for the group that gathered with us for this special weekend. A group of six, three of whom had already shared past retreats with us, came together in a space of warmth, openness, and connection. There is always something beautiful about welcoming returning participants—witnessing their deepening practice and growth while weaving in new voices and fresh perspectives. We really felt that we were able to get to know them more through sharing and lunchtime conversations. It reminded a little of the Certificate Training, when the connections deepen over time, taking learning to a whole new level.

The theme of this retreat was summer, and with it, the exploration of joy, connection, and expression. In Traditional Chinese Medicine, summer is associated with the Heart, Small Intestine, and Pericardium channels—pathways that govern how we hold, process, and share our emotions, particularly joy. Throughout the weekend, we worked with these meridians, integrating them into our Shiatsu practice, movement, and discussions.

What is joy to you?

One of the most powerful aspects of the retreat was the way joy became a central theme, not just in theory but in experience. We danced, not just as an exercise but as an expression of the heart. We shared meals together, not simply as nourishment but as moments of presence and connection. We held space for deep conversations, reflecting on what brings each of us joy and how we can cultivate more of it in our lives.

What stood out most was how each participant found their own way into joy. For some, it was the quiet moments of receiving Shiatsu, feeling the warmth of hands working along their meridians. For others, it was the freedom of movement, allowing the body to express what words could not. Most noticed that they experience at least two distinct types of joy that express differently and also serve different needs. And for some, joy was in the simple act of being together, sharing stories, and feeling truly seen.

Key Shiatsu Techniques

Through our Shiatsu practice, we explored techniques for supporting the Heart and Small Intestine meridians—finding ways to release stagnation and invite more flow, both physically and emotionally. We discussed the role of the Pericardium, often seen as the protector of the heart, and how we can soften its barriers while still maintaining healthy boundaries. These are lessons that extend beyond the treatment room and into daily life: How do we stay open yet protected? How do we listen deeply—not just to others, but to ourselves?

Reflections on Joy and Gratitude

For those reading, we encourage you to take a moment to reflect: What brings you joy? How do you nourish your heart, not just physically but emotionally? Sometimes, the simplest acts—connecting with loved ones, moving your body freely, resting in stillness—can be the most profound.

We leave this retreat feeling deeply grateful. Grateful for the group that came with open hearts, for the opportunity to hold this space, and for the reminder that joy is always within reach when we take the time to listen and feel.

As we look ahead, we carry these lessons forward, knowing that each season brings its own wisdom, and each retreat is an opportunity to deepen our connection—with ourselves, with each other, and with the cycles that guide us.

Our next Retreat is a special one. We gather in Pakiri, Auckland, in a beautiful bush setting from the 28th of February until the 2nd of March, with camping and loads of relaxed time to connect and ground into the earth element energy of Late Summer!
